Adjust ring sizes

An antique ring is a unique piece. This is precisely where its special appeal lies – but also a practical question: what happens if you like the ring, but the existing ring size doesn't fit perfectly?

At Saskia Seewald Antique Jewelry, every possible ring size adjustment is individually assessed. Because a historic ring should not simply be altered. It should be made wearable without losing its character, substance, and craftsmanship.

When the ring is perfect – but not yet the right size

Many antique rings were made for a specific person, a specific hand, and a specific time. Unlike modern mass-produced goods, they are not available in a wide range of sizes.

If you have discovered a special ring, it is therefore worth making a personal inquiry. Often, a ring size can be adjusted. However, whether and to what extent a change is possible always depends on the individual ring.

Not only the desired size is crucial, but also the construction of the ring, the material, the setting, the stone trim, and the condition.

Free service with the purchase of a ring

If you purchase a ring from Saskia Seewald Antikschmuck, we will gladly check if the ring size can be adjusted for you. If a professional alteration is possible, our goldsmith will take care of the adjustment of the purchased ring for you.

Since antique rings are always unique pieces, each alteration is individually checked. Material, setting, stone trim, ring shank, and condition determine whether and to what extent an adjustment is sensible.

This way, you can still choose a special ring even if the stated size doesn't fit perfectly right away.

Can antique rings be resized?

If you purchase a ring from Saskia Seewald Antique Jewelry, we will gladly check if the ring size can be adjusted for you. If a professional alteration is possible, the adjustment of the purchased ring will be carried out by our goldsmith for you.

Since antique rings are always unique pieces, each alteration is individually checked. The material, setting, stone trim, shank, and condition determine whether and to what extent an adjustment is appropriate.

This way, you can choose a special ring even if the stated size doesn't immediately fit perfectly.

What is checked during a ring size alteration

Before a ring size is adjusted, we carefully examine the piece of jewelry. This includes, among other things, the material, workmanship, setting, gemstones, ring shank, any traces of previous alterations, and the general condition.

This inspection is particularly important for antique rings. A ring can be beautiful and yet have limitations if its construction, stones, or historical craftsmanship do not allow for major alterations.

In such cases, we provide honest advice. Sometimes an adjustment is quite possible, sometimes only to a small extent, and sometimes a ring should best remain unaltered.

Why not every ring can be customized

Antique jewelry thrives on originality and craftsmanship. Therefore, resizing a ring should never be viewed purely from a technical perspective. It must suit the piece of jewelry.

For some rings, too drastic a change can impair the proportions, stability, or design. This is particularly true for antique engagement rings, rings with diamonds, colored gemstones, pearls, cameos, or continuous details, where a delicate touch is required.

Our aim is not to alter every ring at any cost. Our aim is to find a solution that is professionally sound and does justice to the piece of jewelry.

Determine Your Ring Size

If you already know your ring size, please let us know directly when making your inquiry. If you are unsure, we recommend having your ring size professionally measured by a goldsmith or jeweler near you.

If you already own a ring that fits you well, you can alternatively measure the inner diameter. Place the ring flat on a ruler and measure the clear inner diameter in millimeters. Multiply this value by 3.14.

Example: An inner diameter of 18 mm results in 18 × 3.14 = 56.52. In this case, this roughly corresponds to ring size 57.

Please note: This method is for guidance only. The actual fit may vary slightly depending on ring width, ring shape, and personal wearing comfort.

This is how the inspection at Saskia Seewald Antique Jewelry works

If you are interested in a ring, you can tell us your desired ring size. We will then check whether an adjustment seems generally possible and whether a more precise assessment by an experienced goldsmith would be useful.

Every alteration is considered individually and not decided according to a rigid scheme. Before a possible adjustment, we will clarify with you what is feasible, what limitations there may be, and what the further process will look like.

This way, you will know before purchasing whether the desired ring fits your hand or can be made to fit.

Clarify ring size before purchase

Especially with antique rings, it makes sense to discuss the ring size before purchasing. This can avoid a situation where a special piece cannot be worn as desired later.

If you already know your ring size, please let us know directly. If you are unsure, we will advise you on how to best determine the size.

Upon request, we can also discuss whether a ring should fit rather loosely, exactly, or somewhat more comfortably – depending on the ring's shape, width, and your personal wearing preference.
